For about two bucks, you can reach down from the hole above and grab yourself an "Omikuji". Inside is written your luck for the New Year or as indicated on the scroll. This is quite popular all year around, but especially on New Years Day. The Hiragana on the right is how Omikuji is written in Japanese. There are several forms of Omikuji and I thought these were quite colorful.
Omikuji includes your fortune about love, travel, missing items, illness, competition, chance, employment, the person you wait for, buying and selling, money, learning, an examination, and more.
